The Montreal Canadiens’ power play has changed significantly, with the additions of Patrik Laine and Lane Hutson, along with the decision made regarding Nick Suzuki.



The captain now plays on both units.

Despite a 21.5% power play efficiency since the start of the season, the Montreal Canadiens rank only 17th in the NHL in that department.

The problem isn’t the first unit, composed of Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky, Patrik Laine, and Lane Hutson, but rather the second unit, which struggles to score goals.

The Habs’ power play has been struggling, converting at under 7% during their five-game losing streak.

 

A proposal from Renaud Lavoie for Cole Caufield that I love

As reported by Renaud Lavoie, Martin St-Louis has indeed decided to also place the captain on the second power play unit, meaning Suzuki spends the full two minutes on the power play.

During his daily segment on the show JiC on TVA Sports, the veteran journalist suggests that Cole Caufield should also spend the entire power play on the ice.

Having Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki on both units: an interesting idea

Without taking anything away from Emil Heineman or Joel Armia, Lavoie doesn’t see how the Canadiens’ number 13 could get exhausted during a full two-minute shift, and we have to admit it would give the Habs even more scoring chances.

This same idea could even be applied to Patrik Laine, who finds the back of the net more often than not with the man advantage.

Unless Cole Caufield takes Patrik Laine’s place in his old spot when he’s on the second power play unit?

I really don’t dislike this suggestion from the TVA Sports journalist.
